Hydraulic Hose Inspection & Replacement Guide

Hydraulic and industrial hoses fail from the outside in and the inside out. Knowing what to look for, how often to check, and when to replace the whole assembly keeps lines running and people safe.

Why hoses fail

Most hose failures trace back to a handful of causes: external abrasion that wears through the cover, tight bends or kinking below the minimum bend radius, heat and ozone aging that hardens the tube, fitting corrosion or improper crimps, and pressure spikes beyond the rated working pressure.

How often to inspect

Give hoses a quick visual check before each shift in demanding service, and a closer scheduled inspection on a fixed interval. Many manufacturers also publish a recommended service life after which an assembly should be replaced even if it still looks serviceable, because internal degradation isn't visible.

What to look for

  • Cracks, blisters, or abrasion in the cover — especially any reinforcement showing through
  • Leaks, weeping, or staining at the hose or fittings
  • Kinks, crushing, or flattening
  • Corroded, cracked, or slipping fittings and loose crimps
  • Stiffness, charring, or a hose that has gone hard with age

When to replace

Replace the assembly — don't repair it — if you see exposed reinforcement, leaks, fitting damage, or signs the hose has been over-pressured, and whenever it reaches the manufacturer's stated service life. Reusing fittings or splicing high-pressure hose is not a safe field repair.

This is general guidance, not a substitute for the hose and fitting manufacturer's instructions or the applicable standards (for example SAE J517 / ISO hose specifications). Always depressurize a system before inspecting it, and have a qualified person make replacement decisions.
