If you're tagging industrial parts so you can scan them later — pull up specs, log an inspection, check a replacement date — you have two mainstream options: a printed QR code or an embedded NFC tag. Both turn a physical part into a scannable record. They behave very differently in the field, though, and the right choice depends on the environment your parts live in.

How each one works
A QR code is a printed pattern. A phone camera reads it, decodes a URL, and opens the linked record. The data isn't in the code — the code just points to it.
An NFC tag is a tiny chip and antenna embedded in a sticker, disc, or rugged housing. Holding a phone close (a couple of centimeters) reads it. Like a QR code it usually stores a URL, but the read happens by radio rather than by camera.
Durability in industrial environments
This is where the decision is usually made. A QR code only works if the camera can see it clearly. On parts exposed to oil, grit, paint overspray, abrasion, heat, or UV, a printed label degrades — and a smudged or scratched QR code is unreadable. You can mitigate with laser-etched plates or industrial label stock, but the failure mode is real.
NFC tags don't rely on a clean visual surface. They can be encapsulated in epoxy or rugged housings and still read through grime, paint, and light coatings (though not through thick metal). Cost
QR codes win clearly on raw cost — they're essentially free to generate and cost only what it takes to print durably. NFC tags carry a per-tag hardware cost (typically cents to a couple of dollars depending on ruggedness). For very high volumes of low-value parts, QR can be the pragmatic choice. For parts that are expensive, safety-critical, or live in harsh conditions, the NFC tag cost is trivial against the value of a reliable scan.
Scanning experience
QR scanning requires line of sight, adequate light, and a steady aim — awkward for a part in a cramped or dark location. NFC is a tap: bring the phone near the part and the record opens, no aiming, no light needed. On modern phones NFC reading is built in, so neither method requires a special app for a basic scan.
Data capacity and security
Both typically store a short URL rather than the full record, so capacity rarely decides it. NFC has a modest edge in that tags can be made read-only or cryptographically signed, which is useful if you're worried about someone cloning or swapping a tag on a safety-critical asset.
When QR codes are the right call
- High volumes of low-cost parts where per-tag hardware cost adds up
- Clean, indoor environments where labels stay readable
- Parts with a flat, visible surface for a durable printed code
- You want the lowest possible upfront cost to get started
When NFC tags are the right call
- Harsh environments — oil, abrasion, weather, paint
- Safety-critical parts where a missed scan has consequences (slings, structural bolts, pressure hoses)
- Parts in awkward or low-light locations where aiming a camera is impractical
- You want tamper resistance on the tag itself
The practical recommendation
For most industrial parts — the kind that get dirty, live outdoors, or carry a load — NFC is the more reliable long-term choice, and the tag cost is small next to the cost of an unreadable code on a safety-critical part. For clean, high-volume, low-value items, QR is a perfectly reasonable way to start.
